    Essence Festival New Orleans 1997

Dr. Maya Angelou performs at Essence Fest in 1997.
She honored and admired New Orleans.

July 19th, 2014 three women invited the city of New Orleans to share in a celebration of the life of Dr. Maya Angelou at the Algiers Regional Library on the Westbank of New Orleans.
3 people who are members of the Library Poetry group, felt it was their mission to give thanks and praise to celebrate the life of one of the centuries great woman artist and humanitarian.

Her book about her past as a sex worker
    "Gather Together in My Name"

Dr. Maya Angelou was a sex worker and she proved, in her life and her stories, that there’s nothing wrong with it.

    To quote her:

    Now you understand
just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
    When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
    I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
    The bend of my hair,
    the palm of my hand,
    the need for my care.
    ‘Cause I’m a woman
    Phenomenally.
