Don’t go unless you have to. The island and most of its infrastructure were destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. Don’t know where the rebuilding effort stands at this time. Maybe check with a knowledgeable travel agent.

A friend of mine just came back recently and said everything was good to go there. Only area affected still were the outlying smaller towns so that should be fine. As far as crime i'm sure it still has its areas and certain times to avoid.
