who here likes to go for long drives in the country to see wildflowers? I love this pastime in the spring around here. where are some good roads to drive looking at flowers in central texas? Has anyone done the willow city loop yet this year? how is it?

This guy. I’ve done the recon Sue. It’s pretty bleak out in the hill country this year with regards to wildflowers except for one spot. Head west on 71, about 10 or 15 miles before Llano the sides of the road looks like waterfalls the bluebonnets are so thick. Just a few Indian Paintbrushes, brown-eyed Susan’s and primroses but the BB’s are worth the drive. It really does lift anyone’s spirits to see the show they put on this time of year. At Llano either turn south on highway 16 to Fredericksburg then take 290 back to ATX for an extended wildflower tour (about 4 hrs round trip) or just turn back around on 71 and soak up that stunning spectacle twice.

I am partial to the flowers found southeast from here, particularly Drummond's phlox and winecups which are found on remote country roads in the sandy soils south of 71 east of town heading towards bastrop. that area has these gorgeous flowers some years. the phlox are particularly spectacular and only found around that area southeast of town. I just love them. I wonder if the freeze adversely affected them this year. I may well go against the trend and drive southeast to look for them. bluebonnets are found everywhere around here but those phlox, you must go look for them.

today I drove to Taylor and then down 79 to Cameron and saw some bluebonnets but not many. a few Indian paintbrush and surprisingly a lot of blue-eyed grass showing up.
