Red face So what's your general opinion of furries/their fandom?

First post now that I'm back and I've asked elsewhere, so I thought I'd get y'alls opinion.

During my forced absence I dated a furry for a bit and had a chance to explore their...interesting fandom. So I wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with furries or what your general thoughts were about them?

.....so good to see ya back my friend

Ok, an attempt at a balanced definition. I am NOT a furry but both sides hear me out before reaching for that thumbs down.

Furries are a relatively recent phenomenon which has been catapulted into near-mainstreamness almost solely because of the internet. It is obvious furries are very much victims of tarring the majority with the brush of an "unappealing" minority.

In the simplest sense furries are fans of anthropromorphic animals. That is, animals with human like features or tendencies (Fox McCloud, Sonic the Hedgehog... etc) pretty much all furries will create their own character or "fursona" for use as an art model and roleplaying, the designs of which vary wildly dependant on the artists skill and eye for contrasting colours (You get both amazing and appalling furry artists, and a wide skill range between these two) some furries can work wonders when it comes to creating a character on second life

The above paragraph is an apt description of your standard "furry", however there is a small but VERY vocal minority of the "yiff yiff" kind of division. Even though this sort of furry probably only takes up 1/10th of the fandom this is by FAR the type you hear about most often from anti-furry biased sources.

Furry porn is dangerously close to bestiality. Sorry to anyone who likes it, but it is... However the ones who like it seem to be in a minority, with the ones liking the odd fetishes like "vore" and "macro" a very small minority indeed.

Furries get a lot of crap thrown at them on the internet in relation to the activities of the minority of their fanbase. They have a reputation to reacting to this in an over the top manner (such as comparing their treatment to the Holocaust), which realy doesn't do them many favours.

However on the whole they are just a group of people who are fans of a single concept, seem to know how to have fun, and are doing alright for themselves in terms of publicity.

Very good description! I'm so glad there are people who understand. When I would tell people my ex was a furry, the first thing they'd say was "oh! I saw that CSI episode." Ugh. That's not even close. And as much as they spend on suits (even for that purpose), not likely.
There's an inside joke that the furry community is 95% gay (which while it may be an exaggeration, they are definitely the majority). That brings up 2 things. 1: many gay guys are more vocal about their bedroom habits and more sexual/sensual. They're not as easily embarrassed by any sexual deviations. Unfortunately, that means that quite often that's all that non-furries see as a representation of the fandom. Number 2: let's be honest. Gay guys still aren't well-liked or accepted everywhere. So that doesn't help. Now ya have to hide 2 lifestyles. Being gay and a furry.
There is a lot of drama at times, but it only surrounds certain people. Just like in every fandom. And usually the young ones. Since it's such a small community (in public anyway), just a few bad eggs can ruin it for everyone.
One last thing. Being an Anime nerd, I decided to attend a furry con. The difference is night and day. So much more friendly and (much to my the dismay of my personal bubble) always ready to hug.

I have to admit, the furry thing was brought first to my attention by the CSI episode...

I say live and let live. What's the problem?

Aiyanna, being an Anime nerd, it would be awesome if you came to the Halloweenie Social as an Anime character...

    May I suggest...

    Sailor Moon

"Don't come here and grumble about going too fast. Get the hell out of the race car if you've got feathers on your legs or butt. Put a kerosene rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up there and eat that candy ass."
