What’s the difference between friends and contacts?

I’ve noticed I can add someone as a contact (pops up as a choice when I click on a member’s name) or friend (when I’m on a verified member’s page. I’m guessing a contact won’t turn into a friend unless I choose both. Is that correct? Any other differences? What does it mean when someone is a contact?

I’ve been a member of this site since the beginning. You’d think I’d have some of the basics down by now.

Group Contact is one-way. Friends are two-way.

    Almost correct.

Before a user is added to your Friend list, they have to accept
your Friend request.. If it’s denied, then they’ll just
    remain a Contact.

You don’t need another user’s approval to add them as your Contact.

Your Contacts is also a private list that only you can see in your
User CP under Friends & Contacts.

Friend is a mutual, two-way connection.

Friends are publicly made when one user accepts the friend
request from another user, and the connection is created
as both users appear on each other’s list of friends
    that’s on their profiles.

    Contact is a one-way friendship.

Contacts are privately added to a user’s list of Contacts, and only the
user themselves can see both their Friends & Contacts
    in their User CP.

    It can either mean...

A user doesn’t want to send a Friend request at this time, so
they add the other user to their list of Contacts instead.

A user sent a Friend request, but it’s pending.
If the request is denied, the other user is still left on their list of Contacts.
If the request is accepted, then the users become each other’s Friend.

If one user removes another user from their Friends list, the other
user will still see them in their list of Contacts.

Ha! Honestly, I swear the term “Contact” reminds me
of the good ‘ole AOL days of the internet lolol

    Who says “Contact” anymore??

Nowadays, “Friend” friending, friend request, friends list,
etc. are widely used terms when referring
    to online relationships

vBulletin should stick with the times and do away with the
“Contacts” since it can be confusing... folks can make private
lists of their wannabe Friends elsewhere, seriously :p
