The best and the cheapest is organic coconut oil. I think it's about 4 dollars and it works the best and it's good for you. You can by the liquid form, which I use, or you can by the sold form.

Obviously coconut oil has many benefits and it is quite popular as a lubricant, however, there are some things people should know about it.

It's an oil so it can break down condoms that's one major issue to keep in mind. Coconut oil is definitely a wonderfully performing lubricant and helps with vaginal dryness b/c it's an emollient (it helps lock in water). It even has some antifungal and antimicrobial properties (with caveats - see below).

However, there is also a bit of a double edged sword here. The low osmolality does help in hydration but it also means it can create a filmy substance in the vagina which *can* become a breeding ground for bacteria. Coconut oil, for all its glory, and as good as it is as a lubricant and health product, is also highly alkaline, yet the natural condition of the vagina is acidic. The high alkalinity along with the emollient effects "can" create a situation ripe for bacterial or fungal growth. Just something all women should be aware of and especially if they are using it fairly regularly.

Yeast infections are caused by fungus and the antifungal effects of coconut oil are pretty awesome. It works well to stage off the typical Candida family of yeasts (of which there are many varieties). Your natural lactobacilli colony is primarily what keeps this yeast at bay which is why you don't want to upset the biota or low acidic pH.

Other types of vaginitis and BV (bacterial vaginosis) conditions are caused by bacterias not fungii. Coconut oil is primarily a good antimicrobial against e. coli & staph related bacterias. BV though is caused by something like gardnerella vaginalis.

Coconut oil will not have antimicrobial effects on these bacteria and you could even upset the natural flora of lactobacilli which are the good bacteria that live in your vaginal canal. They create the acidic environment via metabolism of glucose from epithelial cells (the byproduct of their glucose metabolism is lactic acid -- hence the name lactobacillus).

So, the big takeaways here are:

1. oils should not be used with condoms as they cause breakdown of latex products

2. coconut oil, while indeed a very, very good hydrator, with many health benefits (no doubt), is not at all an *absolute* perfect "use it all the time" or "massive quantities" solution for lubricating the vagina. It can cause its own issues with too much, too frequently, certain genetic factors, diets, etc...

Good lubes that are safe and healthy for the vagina and won't destroy latex:

I keep all coconut oils away from my vulva (personal choice). I also drink daily (orally) my 'heaux juice' for other added benefits.

I use hot Nuru gel during most of my sessions. It not only provides for sensual b2b but also works as a great long lasting lube. It is seaweed based. Not sure the ph however? It is not near as messy as some report. I find little residue when it dries.

I also use sliquid, water based. Extremely slippery and long lasting.

Ladies DO NOT use this in your vagina.

Not only does it contain Glycerin (read above) but worse it contains sodium hydroxide. Know the common name for sodium hydroxide? "Lye"

I'm sure you have seen "lye" used in movies to melt a body for disposal? It burns more than HCL or muriatic acid & has a pH of 14 (max possible pH *extremely* alkaline & corrosive). Granted it's a very, very small amount, sometimes used to counteract acids in the compound.

You absolutely do NOT NOT NOT want to put this anywhere near your vagina. I wouldn't even let that get on my penis. It could cause a serious allergic reaction. Sodium hydroxide is HIGHLY corrosive as a base.

Tiger I know you were trying to help, no offense, I just want to warn people. No offense at all buddy.

Ladies don't use this on your vagina. Guys, don't even use this to masturbate. Frankly I wouldn't use a product that contains any amount of sodium hydroxide for all the tea in China. I have sensitive skin & anyone who does could burn badly. Probably why it feels "hot". It's burning your skin! For women it could also cause further drying out after use and cleanup, putting you at much higher risk for BV or yeasts and so on. If it works for you for NURU style massaging on the body (not genitals) then fine but be careful and don't use it on genitals.

I can't stress enough, absolutely, under no circumstances, should you use any product containing sodium hydroxide ("lye").

Note: Sliquid however is a decent product and safe.

Math guy thanks for breaking this down. However I think it is somewhat alarmist tone for what is likely a trace ingredient, sodium hydroxide. The main ingredients are water and nori seaweed which is commonly used in wrapping sushi. Trace amounts of sodium hydroxide is used in food preparations and even in things like sour cream and some toothpastes. Most of the literature I have found indicates sodium hydroxide is used as an neutralizing agent to bring compounds closer to a ph of 7. I think that is what we need to know about Nuru. What is the products ph?

The nuru gel is not exothermic. It is only hot because we add hot water. It has no sensation to the skin at all. I'm pretty sure I would feel it if ph was very high.

Information on Nuru ph is not easy to find but perhaps us scientists (I'm a physicist) can do more digging to determine potential risks.
