The 23/34 mileage you quoted for a BMW must not have been for an 8. There is no way an 8 cylinder BMW gets that much. Also, if you're going from a Toyota to a BMW, be prepared for a shock - both on reliability and cost. However, in terms of driving fun, a BMW can't be beat; especially an 8 or a 3 M. All this is for cars; don't know how their SUVs are on handling.

SUV handling comparison to a coupe or sedan is no comparison at all COG(Center of Gravity).
The SUV's are too top heavy to handle in turns or cornering like a car.

^I'm thinking about leasing and just keeping it for two years. I am on my second 4runner and Toyota is hard to beat. I had a blue Ceilca that just would not die and a Camry that was really nice. I just want to drive something different and I have had great luck with BMW.
The only fun part for me now days is test driving cars.

Can you get a reasonable two year lease? If you can, get whatever is in your budget that turns you on the most. Two years and low miles you won't even have to put tires on it.

X1 has a 228hp 2 liter 4 cylinder turbo. Probably a little underpowered for much of a sporty feel.
