    Crowdsourcing Sleep Solutions

I'm looking for suggestions for getting to sleep and (more importantly) staying asleep. And I'm desperate. I'm not interested in trying any of the z-drugs (they cause sleep fragmentation), and I've already tried benzodiazepines (they have no effect on me). I'm constantly running on fumes as I regularly wake up at 3 AM, and it's about to drive me insane (it's also been REALLY detrimental during sexcapades). Thanks for any insight.

Are your sleep problems anxiety related? Mine were for sure, so I got an Rx for that. I've had good luck with Z-Quill. Melatonin, not so much. I found all of the OTC herbal remedy stuff to be laughably ineffective. I also have mild sleep apnea and was prescribed a cpap machine. That has helped A LOT. Despite that, I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night for an hour or two, and so does pretty much everyone else I've spoken with about sleep issues since Covid began. Everything is more stressful these days under the cloud of that and the political climate that has everyone at each other's throats. So many people have told me, "I just don't sleep right anymore, not like I used to..." You're not alone these days, that's for sure. One other thing: what's your exercise routine like? Regular strenuous aerobic exercise would be a big help if you're not doing that. Train for a marathon--you'll sleep like a baby.

ps--I think it's a tragedy that no one's created a pill that will effectively knock a person out for two hours with no side effects. I guess if there was such a thing there's be no need for anesthesiologists. lol

I suppose the problems could be anxiety-related, but I've tried pretty much every pharmaceutical under the sun for anxiety in the past, and none has had any effect. I have had sleep studies that reveal that I twitch when I sleep (periodic limb movement syndrome) and I also have some obstructive sleep apnea (I can't stand the CPAP mask, though), but this waking up at 2 or 3 AM and not being able to get back to sleep is relatively new. I go to the gym six days a week (it's not as impressive as it sounds as I'm only there for about 45 minutes), and that definitely helps me fall asleep, but the problem is staying there. It's gotten to the point where I have microsleeps (which are not good when you're doing things like driving), and it's definitely affecting me cognitively (and probably emotionally). It's just fucking maddening.

If you wake up between 2am and 4am, this could be hormonal imbalance.

In San Marcos there is B&J Pharmacy, where you can do saliva test for that. I think it was about $300 for full test and consultation(without insurance).

Testosterone and Estrogen are dependent on each other and other hormones. Imbalance will produce sleep problems, anxiety, anger, stress, crying, lack of energy and list does go on.
I have started taking Herbal Supplements, Exhilarin and MyoCalm Plus, together with Progesterone and Estrogen, and I see a big difference. Please consult your doctor.

If you can sleep while sitting in front of a TV, then a white noise machine or app might help. I use a Dreamegg Sleep Machine - available on Amazon.

If you watch TV or use a computer at night, glasses with a blue-blocker tint may help or changing the color temp or setting to night or blue light filter.

If you drink, try not having any alcohol and see if that helps.

Unfortunately in TX, Ambien seems to be viewed very unfavorably by the state.

I would day get some bloodwork done. You may be low on magnesium. It is essential for many chemical functions in the body. If you are low it can be a serious couple of issues. Best of luck.

I have sleep apnea as well. I started using a oral appliance from a dentist here in town and like it way better than my cpap. To get to sleep and stay asleep I recommend meditation and I use some supps called genius sleep aid. You can get them on amazon.

I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP mask at night. I have been sleeping very well for last 20 years and wouldn't change a thing.

Talk to your GP first and have them set up a formal sleep study which will be reviewed by specialists to diagnose what might be done to improve your sleep.

The appliance mentioned above might be the solution or a CPAP could be one, or maybe laser surgery of your sinus passages might be needed. NEVER KNOW until you see the right doctors. Could just be a change in diet or not using caffeine in afternoons and evening. Many possible solutions--see a doctor. It will change you life for the positive.

Yeah, Rusty is right. There are many things that could be going on and seeing a doc is the best advice.

When @RustyBalls recommends a trip to the doctor, you don't walk; you fucking run to the MD!

I myself have a slight misalignment of my spine that sometimes gives me discomfort, though I happen to be a veteran and am prescribed Lunesta ( I don’t take it every night though only on night I feel I need it, though I was USAF active duty for three years after high school , so I get all medical care from the VA hospital , though I still get CBD oil, a veteran introduce me and It is a wonderful to calm anxiety, help with aches , pain (minor or more intense) also think about starting to see a chiropractor once a week, I know of one that is wonderful, does full body adjustments.... this can help very much too.

And going to a doctor about your current sleep problems of not being to get much sleep , I recommend you go to one as soon as you can ; as you get older , sleep will become more important . Best to take care of this problem with not getting sleep as soon as possible; I recommend you go see a civilian primary care doctor as soon as possible. Rusty is right, going to see a doctor would be a great thing to do.

Though CBD oil or any CBD products with melatonin would be good to try , though please see a doc as soon as you can.

Thanks. I have had sleep studies, but it's been a while, and those were to determine what was causing daytime fatigue (it turns out that a lot of things go wrong for me during sleep). This waking up after only a few hours of sleep is a new and entirely different animal, though.

So, I'm assuming they found nothing like sleep apnea, airway obstructions, etc., during those studies?
