From what I can gather.. that's a red flag. Being a newbie myself I'm hesitant to prepay for anything

Absolutely not, I would never prepay. It's not just the possibility it being scammed, but I would say that it also could be classified as an admission of guilt.

if you are looking thru skip the games on these adds, deposit required, look up other cities same add in 50 different places, odd are it a scam, also the ones qith a gmail account, email it and then it the credit card too prove your 21 years old and then a different program too join too get their phone number, a cheap way too get you email address so that can spam that email address.
