The numerous steps involved in the instructions reduce to 9y + 9. So you have multiples of 9, and 9 is rather unique.

Give this a read for a passionate elaboration.

By multiplying by 3, then by 3 again you've multiplied by 9. Everything else is distraction. And no other numbers matter once you've been asked to add up the individual digits. All multiples of 9 have digits which add up to 9. If you reduce it to single digits.

    1*9=9, 0+9=9
    2*9=18, 1+8=9
    3*9=27, 2+7=9
    4*9=36, 3+6=9

    75584*9=680256, 6+8+0+2+5+6=27, 2+7=9

This is an intrisic property of the highest number in any number base. If you do everything in base 8, octal, it's 7. In hexidecimal its 15, or F as it's commonly represented in single character form. For base 10, it's 9.
