alot off topic

I have been in the supermarket 2 times this week and been behind people buy hundreds of dollars of candy and shit food with no nutritional value on food stamps/louisiana purchase card. I am so tired of people openly raping the system on my dime. If your hungry, hey I dont mind feeding you,but dammit!!! And I cant even afford to hobby! this new "trillion dollar package" has more benefits for people that dont wanna work, thats why jindal refused some of the "free" money in the new bill, because it required perminant law changes that would raise compensation for these people if we accepted the money. Everone comes up on hard times,this is totally understood and accepted by me,but not many people have them that last a lifetime..... I know its off topic,but the boards slow here and I gotta vent to someone. GRRRRRRRRRR! hopefully I dont offend any working class people here. Im at the end of my rope. any ladies running any specials for a stressed out man ? thanks,I feel ALOT better already.

I used to work for a grocery store a LONG time ago and I noticed the same thing.. and it pissed me off too.. but you know why they do that? Because shit food and candy doesn&#39;t go bad and is cheaper than good food like fresh fruit, vegetables and a nice piece of meat. And it&#39;s much easier to eat all that crap than prepare a decent meal.. Hell, I could go off on here really bad about the same subject. If you notice, the people with those cards are mostly overweight if not even obese or do not look very healthy. You can get a box of 12 little debbies for a dollar but a bag of 12 navel oranges costs 5 bucks if not more. A bag of potatoes costs 5 bucks depending on the time of year and what store you go to but a bag of "Cheetos" (lol had to do it hahahaha) costs $2.50. To me it&#39;s all a scam... bad food is cheaper therefore causing health problems which in turn cause medical bills and insurance rates go up. They are all working together.. It&#39;s a conspiracy... a big circle of events that won&#39;t ever change unless someone makes a radical change.. and that won&#39;t happen because a radical change would offend so many people and the government doesn&#39;t want people offended.. I better stop now before the FBI or CIA show up at my door with their dark suits and glasses and tell me to come take a ride with them.. LOL...

I hate to disagree with you, but you can buy canned or frozen fruit and vegetables for less than you can buy junk food. While it is not as good as fresh it still has more nutritional value than chips and little debbies.

There are produce markets all over Baton Rouge where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables at great prices. The fact is most people taking part in these assistant programs that are buying junk food are simply to lazy to cook fresh foods anyway.Just my opinion.

Oh most definitely. I do have a cupboard full of canned veggies too.. I have seen people buy those in bulk and buy meat in bulk on those programs and they are smart for doing that. But I&#39;ve also seen the buggies full of raisin pies and candy and chips and soda and I was absolutely amazed that someone who has a monthly allowance for example of 200 would spend the majority of it on junk food. I just couldn&#39;t bring myself to do that no matter who was paying for my groceries.. I love to cook.... and it shows... LOL.. My mama always said you should never trust a skinny chef.... LOL

Thank you cheeto. I&#39;m glad to see I&#39;m not the only one that notices those things. I understand how anyone can fall on hard times. And I also agree that there is a need for the programs when people REALLY do need the help. BUT I think that there should be time limits and rules set in place so that people don&#39;t abuse it and try to live off the system.

This country is very close to what the pastor said, the gap between poor and wealthy is getting larger. Middle class are going broke payng for all the social programs. When 3 generations are on welfare. They demand that the goverment give them everything. What used to really tick me off is you drive by the projects and see Cadillac Escaldes and Lexus&#39;s parked there and I&#39;m driving an 8 year old truck. Like chetto said don&#39;t get me started. AMEN! Could not have said it better myself. Not only La but Ms is one of the poorest, uneducated states ever! I work for everything I have and a lot of things they have! Believe me it did not one bit of good being angry at them due to misfortune or their bad choices in life. These folks are not the majority and the ones that are abusing the programs are in the end are only hurting themselves and their families.

I find it highly unlikely that anyone would be on public assistance for half a century. Unfortuantely if you are a working person (as most of us are) you are going to pay into a system that takes care of those who legitimately can&#39;t fend for themselves ( the sick and the elderly) and the lazy scammers as well. I&#39;m in my mid thirties and I find myself paying into a social security program that may not be there when I get old enought to need it, but I don&#39;t spend my time berating senior citizens for "stealing my money".

I think seniors are entitled to compensation.anyone with common sense would say that. Im talking about people having additional "paychecks" every nine months with no plan except getting their kids raised for free,which in turn transfer into adults that expect the same. free money and dont even have to take a urine test. to get a job and earn money people are required to take urine tests. your never gonna get my point. I personally believe seniors and veterans shouldnt have to pay taxes to support drains on society. they paid their dues. probably 65% of the people 18-50 on assistance are just lazy. playing the devils advocate isnt gonna change my opinion.the differences between you and I are obvious,but thanks anyways for your time.

I was at the Wally World on Tchopilouas (SP?) a couple of weeks back, and a lady in front of me was using WIC and also Foodstamps. She had about 5 kids (not too sure if they were all her&#39;s or not). As she checked out she used all of the limit on the Foodstamp card, and then proceded to by Fruit Loops with the WIC vouchers. The cashier polietly told the lady that she could not use the WIC to get Fruit Loops, and that it had to be the generic brand. The lady made a big scene cussing out the cashier, and saying that she wanted to by Fruit Loops with the WIC because the generic brand wasn&#39;t good enough for her. She then looked at me and said " I bet you if his white ass came up here and wanted to buy Fruit Loops with the WIC you would let him. She made a few more comments at me, and then I polietly told her that I used WIC before, and I had no problems getting the generic brands, and that beggers can&#39;t be choosers be happy with what you can get for free. She started cussing at me, and I flashed my military police badge at her, and told her nicely to chill out, or I would get the officer out front to arrest her for disturbing the peace. She apologized and left the store.

The whole system makes me sick. I applied for the disaster food stamps after Gustav just like everyone else did, and they said that I made too much money to get any assistance (couldn&#39;t claim my kid bc he lives with his mom full-time). Now you have people who have been on this shit for years, and they got additional money for Gustav I asked for help once, and I couldn&#39;t get it(isn&#39;t it suppose to help you out when you are at need).

It&#39;s just like the housing projects they were ment for "temporary assistance" till you are able to save up money and live on your own. You have people who live a life time in these things. They need to regulate the system a lot better than they are doing.

That is the point that a lot of people fail to understand. That it&#39;s not the programs that are the problem. The programs if used correctly are very helpful to those in need of them. The problem is that they are regulated so little that low-life scum too lazy to work and provide for themselves abuise the system so that they have to work very little, if at all in most cases. There will always be two sides to argue this point and unless our pathetic excuse for a government makes the right changes it will continue to get worse with every generation.

I have first hand knowlege of the way the system gets abused. I have an older sister that has been on the governments tit since she left our house. Between the churches and all the other entitlements she milks the system every chance she gets. I don&#39;t even answer the phone anymore because she always has a sad story and her hand out.
Yet if you go to her she has a freezer full of food and if her or her kids sneeze one time they are at the doctors office.

There are some laborors that work with me sometime that do the same thing.The part that really gets my goat is the earned income credit. One guy that works with us has 5 kids. His girlfriend is on all the government programs. He will only work enough to get qualified for the earned income credit on each child. Cheeto if you got frustrated standing in a grocery line. I magine how I felt with him telling he gets between 6 and 10 thousand back every year. I had to write a check for 15 grand last year.

Thats double dipping.In my mind I don&#39;t separate between black and white but more along the lines of being an assett to society or a burden.

Gdiddy I use to deliver furniture in Atlanta and was in and out of every government housing they had. I saw both people that were truly in need.I also brought high end leather furniture to folks with plenty of luxury vehicles in the parking lot to so that argument don&#39;t stand up.

I dunno, I kinda see cheeto&#39;s point here (although I might not agree with him totally).....I can remember once many years ago when I was in the supermarket and the lady in front of me was purchasing steaks, filets and things of that nature, and I almost shit a brick when she pulled out food stamps to pay for them.....The very thought that went through my head was "WTF??!!??.....Hell, here I am working two jobs to put food on the table for my kids and you can best believe that I wasn&#39;t out there buying expensive cuts of meat while the taxpayers are paying for it".....The person buying the candy and snacks like that MIGHT, JUST MIGHT have a lot of kids and I don&#39;t have a problem with someone buying treats for their kids.....I have always believed that you have to let kids be kids and the grownups are the ones who are supposed to be worrying about stupid shit like the economy.....But someone going out to buy filets, NY Strip, etc., and doing so at the taxpayer&#39;s expense is inexcusable in my book.....Those expensive cuts of meat are luxury items and should be purchased ONLY at your expense and not at public expense.....

I remember about 2 or 3 weeks after that I read something in the newspaper where a lady was responding to someone who made a complaint about this exact same thing that I had witnessed and was angry about and her response was "She believes she&#39;s entitled to purchase those expensive cuts of meats to treat her family every now and then after they&#39;ve been through a very stressful week, or because every now and then she thinks she deserves something special, blah, blah, fucking blah"......Well goddamn then.....We should make the law state that BIG C should be able to take his family out to a 5 Star restaurant and treat them to a very expensive meal, and then be able to spend the night in a 5 Star hotel once a week and have the taxpayers foot the bill.....How fucking ridiculous the notion that taxpayers are responsible and should pay for me and my family to have luxurious items instead of items of necessity.....

When I buy my groceries and pay my state and federal income taxes, I&#39;m paying for those who refuse to get off their lazy asses and earn their keep. I&#39;ve got no problem with helping those who are truly needy, but those are few and far between. And if you think the "revolution" is encouraged by the rich, then you must have the same belief that Obama has in that $250,000 is rich. It&#39;s not those "who portray themselves as common men" it IS the common man that has the problem with those who could and should do for themselves but choose not to. I don&#39;t come close to $250K and I work hard for my money. If you want it, earn it. Don&#39;t steal it from me because you&#39;re a freeloading, lazy piece of shit. Obviously, you don&#39;t live in New Orleans. Ever been to the projects? There is generational public assistance - grandmother lives there, her adult kids live there, her teenaged grandkids live there and her great-grandkids live there. 50 years is the norm, not the exception. And you have driven by the projects, there are many vehicles way more expensive than mine all around. I wish I could afford some of the vehicles I&#39;ve seen there. Yes that argument does stand up. I didn&#39;t say no one who is on public assistance(or the public tit if you prefer) is driving a luxury vehicle. I said if you drive through the projects in New Orleans, it won&#39;t look like you were transported to a Mercedes Benz showroom. I grew up in the projects and went to college and busted my ass getting a career and a real life so that I would never have to live anywhere like that again. There were some miserable, unhappy souls living there whose whole life revolved around their next handout, but that doesn&#39;t represent everyone. However to all the fair and balanced ditto head types out there, I&#39;m sure I&#39;ll never convince them that I earned my way out of there without affirmative action or the government&#39;s help. It isn&#39;t a color thing, it&#39;s a poverty thing and the girl that IL2BR encoutered would have been rude and crude regardless what her race was.

I&#39;m not sure why anyone would be surprised because I don&#39;t ever recall quashing any topic on ASPD as long as it wasn&#39;t something that everyone should know is taboo.....We have discussed sports, politics, and pretty much everything else one can think of.....It&#39;s all good as long as everyone can continue to be adults and intelligent when making their arguments.....

Welfare was started by Pres Johnson in 1965. He called it the great society. The racial thing isn&#39;t really there. there are more single white women with kids on welfare and all the programs than blacks, it just seems we see more of one than the other. Possibly because the white ladies are ashamed of being on it. When I was young there was no assistance at all you either worked or suffered, the strong survived.Our new Pres is just making it worse, more people are looking for free hand outs. Big C I agree with you about don&#39;t get me started on the BAILOUT, it&#39;s more like a 4 tire blowout at high speed. Our goverment is out of control and if someone has a better idea other than revolution let me know, the election process isn&#39;t working we keep getting more crooks after we get rid of one. I&#39;ve noticed way less of this than in the past, prior to when they monitored all these programs electronically (e.g. you get like the equilivant of a debit card instead of actual "stamps")

One reason some may buy highend or name brand items is those are much more desirable for resale as in the neighbor that has other unreported commerce says to the welfare mom, "Hey, you go pick up 6 of them steaks and I&#39;ll give you x, y or z"

As for the nutrition choices, it is more expensive to eat healthy. I also blame it on poor nutritional understanding as well as lazy parenting (as in she won&#39;t shut up unless I get her Doritos)

See, like I said before, I really don&#39;t have a problem with a parent buying snacks and treats for their kids.....I believe kids should be kids and they should have candy and chips and stuff like that (not as a complete meal, but for treats on occasions).....Why should kids have to suffer their childhoods because adults have fucked up the economy.....At least that&#39;s my rationale for saying it&#39;s ok for them to use food stamps (or the debit card) to buy things like that for their kids.....

But goddamn, I just really can&#39;t think of a single reason for someone to flaunt in my face that they&#39;re going to use taxpayer money to feed their family steaks when chicken and pork chops can do the job.....Appearances and it&#39;s just NOT right.....

See, like I said before, I really don&#39;t have a problem with a parent buying snacks and treats for their kids.....I believe kids should be kids and they should have candy and chips and stuff like that (not as a complete meal, but for treats on occasions).....Why should kids have to suffer their childhoods because adults have fucked up the economy.....At least that&#39;s my rationale for saying it&#39;s ok for them to use food stamps (or the debit card) to buy things like that for their kids.....

But goddamn, I just really can&#39;t think of a single reason for someone to flaunt in my face that they&#39;re going to use taxpayer money to feed their family steaks when chicken and pork chops can do the job.....Appearances and it&#39;s just NOT right.....[/b]

I don&#39;t have a problem with junk food on an occasional basis as a treat or reward, regardless of who pays. Hell, my parents took us kids to McDonalds as a treat. That&#39;s being a kid. Agreed.

The problem, again regardless of who pays, is when kids grow up on essentially a vending machine diet supplemented by fast food.

One social program I actually support is Free/Reduced School Lunches. Today schools were closed in Atlanta. I wonder how many thousands of kids won&#39;t get at least one somewhat balanced meal (regardless of taste) in them today?

Just to add a little info. While out on my keystone cop version of trying to get a quickie this morning.
I ran across a fruit stand in my old neighborhood.
I bought enough frozen fruits and vegetables to feed a family of 4 for a week.
47.89 CENTS. You can&#39;t tell me junk food is cheaper than health food.
